9.PRELIMINARY PHYTOCHEMICAL ANALYSIS OF ROOT EXTRACTS OF ASPARAGUS RACEMOSUS WILLD. By L. S. PATEL1 AND R. S. PATEL2
Abstract
Asparagus racemosus Willd, is commonly known as Shatavari, belongs to
family Liliaceae, has potent medicinal values. The present study deals with
Pharmacognostical evaluation including examination of morphological study
of root powder of Asparagus racemosus. Different physicochemical
parameters such as total Ash values: Acid soluble ash, Acid insoluble ash,
water soluble ash, water insoluble ash, loss on drying, foreign matter were
carried out. The study also includes preparation of different extracts like
petroleum ether, methanol, chloroform, acetone, ethyl acetate and water was
also carried out for detailed analysis. Phytochemical screening showed the
presence of various phytoconstituents like alkaloids, anthroquinone,
glycosides, carbohydrates, flavonoids, protein and amino acids, tannins,
phytosterols and saponins. The findings of the current study can be useful to
progress and surge further scientific investigation on the roots of this species.
KEY WORD: Asparagus racemosus, extraction, phytochemical screening,
