15. STUDY OF MACROFAUNA AT HAMISAR LAKE_ BHUJ-KACHCHH_ GUJARAT By NAVINKUMAR K. GUPTE
Abstract
A majority of recognized animal phyla have benthic macro faunal representatives living in marine, estuarine or freshwater environments. Annelid worms, bivalves, gastropods, crustaceans, tunicates, and insect larvae are the most commonly encountered macro fauna in estuarine and coastal areas. They are usually collected using 0.5 or 1 mm mesh screens. Crustaceans constitute a vital component of the food-chains, in an aquatic ecosystem. Phylum Mollusca is used by the birds like painted storks for feeding. Hence it supports a large avifaunal diversity in the lake.
KEY WORDS: Phyla, Benthos, Hamirsar, Macro fauna.
