7.EPIDERMAL STRUCTURES OF THE BILL AND LINGUA OF A DEMOISELLE CRANE ANTHROPOIDES VIRGO BY M.A.SHUKLA AND V.C.SONI
Abstract
The present study was carried out to evaluate the correlation between the food and feeding habit of the Demoiselle Crane and epidermal structures of the bill and lingua of a species. Investigations were conducted on the five specimens. In India during wintering the Demoiselle Crane feeds upon groundnut, wheat and pearl millet in the harvested crop fields of Saurashtra. Its epidermal structures of the jaws and tongue are adapted to feed on such food items and helpful in non-visual tactile foraging habit and pecking feeding technique of the bird species.
KEY WORDS: Demoiselle Crane, Anthropoides virgo, Feeding apparatus, Epidermal structures.
