5.UNRIPE COLLECTION OF MUSLI (Chlorophytum spp.) and ITS IMPACT ON RAW MATERIAL QUALITY- A CASE OF DHAMTARI FOREST_ CHATTISGARH_ INDIA By Manish Mishra and P. C. Kotwal
Abstract
The present paper deals with finding out prevalent harvesting method of Musli
(Chlorophytum spp.), existing malpractices and ocular analysis of raw (dry) market samples
collected from Dhamtari market, Chhattisgarh. Results indicate that Musli tubers are
adulterated both intentionally and unintentionally. The stakeholders adopted malpractices like
selling C. tuberosum, C. arundinaceum species of musli along with genuine material and
sometimes dried roots of different species. Major reasons for poor quality in the study area
are premature root harvesting, mis-identification of species, mixing of similar looking species
etc. The study recommends that harvesting should be done after maturation (November) and
disc with few tubers should be left necessarily for future regeneration. Study also suggests
ways and means to combat adulteration problem in the raw material trade.
