5.ETHNOBOTANICAL PROBE IN FODDER RESOURCES OF BULDHANA DISTRICT (MAHARASHTRA, INDIA) BY Y.A.AHIRRAO1 AND D.A.PATIL
Abstract
The present paper reports results of our ethnobotanical studies in Buldhana district of Maharashtra
(India). Fodder is one of the principal demands by the agrarian tribal and rural communities for their
livestock. Our studies divulged 157 species belonging to 126 genera of 49 angiospermic families useful
as fodder. Of these, 38 are tree species, and many others are either herbs, shrubs, climbers or lianas. As
many as 13 species are found under cultivation. Four species are exotic, naturalized in wild or as crop
weeds. The largest number of species hail from the families viz., Fabaceae, Poaceae, Amaranthaceae,
Euphorbiaceae, Asteraceae, Cucurbitaceae. Their recent botanical names, vernacular names, family,
part/s used, habit, status and the kind of animal fed are noted carefully. Status of the fodder demand in
the district is discussed.
