7.ECOLOGICAL AND ENVIRONMENTAL SIGNIFICANCE OF ANAND SEWAGE POND (ASP) AND UNIVERSITY CATCHMENT RESERVOIR (UCR) IN RELATION TO PHYSICO-CHEMICAL AND BIOTIC COMPONENTS BY HIREN B. SONI, SHEJU THOMAS AND RUTU SUTHAR
Abstract
Wetlands are one of the crucial natural resources. In the present research work, various physico-chemical parameters such as pH, Dissolved Oxygen (DO), Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Acidity, Total Alkalinity (TA), Phenolphthalein Alkalinity (PA), Bicarbonates, Carbonates, Hardness, Chloride, Salinity, Sulphate, Phosphate, and Nitrate, were studied for two lentic ecosytems viz. Anand Sewage Pond (ASP) and University Catchment Reservoir (UCR). Apart from the physico-chemical parameters, the biotic components (phytoplanktons, aquatic macrophytes) were also investigated. Procured data revealed that ASP was more impacted by anthropogenic pressures such as cattle grazing, washing, bathing, domestic drainage, etc. Among phytoplanktons, in total 16 genera represented by 17 species belonging to four families (Cyanophyceae, Cholorophyceae, Bacillariophyceae, Euglenophyceae) were identified. Among the reported families, maximum number of species were of family Cyanophyceae (7), followed by Cholorophyceae (6), Bacillariophyceae (3), and Euglenophyceae (1). Moreover, twelve different species of aquatic macrophytes were observed at both study areas. Of the recorded aquatic macrophytes, rare macrophytes constitutes about 50%, followed by abundant (33.33%) and common (16.66%) at ASP, whereas 41.6% of rare plants, 25% (common) and least (16.66%)abundant species were reported at UCR.
