Abstract
Jharkhand is one of the biodiversity rich regions of India because of its diverse physiographic and climatic conditions. The state largely comprises the forest tracts of Chotanagpur plateau and Santhal Pargana and has a distinct cultural tradition. Wild weeds, fruits, vegetables and other plant parts are consumed as an alternative for staple food by the locals. Unfortunately no systematic documentation on this aspect is present till date. The present study was thus conducted from July 2010 to April 2011 in seven blocks at Ranchi district of Jharkhand to document the wild plants consumed by the locals as vegetables. Twenty two wild plant species consumed as vegetables by the locals were documented. These plants represented 19 families and 20 genera. Utilization of 15 species was used only for their single part/organ while whole plant of four species and rest were utilized for their two parts/organs.
