Effect of Cucumis sativus L. and Cuminum cyminum L. on Physicochemical Properties of RO and Municipal Water

The present study investigates the effect of plant-based treatments using Cucumis sativusL. (cucumber) and Cuminum cyminumL. (cumin) on the physicochemical properties of water. Water samples were collected from a municipal sewage treatment plant and domestic Reverse Osmosis (RO) sources in Ahmedabad. The plant materials were applied in varying concentrations (25 g, 50 g, and 100 g), and the treated samples were analyzed after 24, 48, and 72 hours. Key parameters such as pH, Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), Electrical Conductivity (EC), and hardness were evaluated. Results revealed that Cucumis sativus decreased pH and hardness while moderately increasing TDS and EC. In contrast, Cuminum cyminum significantly increased TDS, EC, and hardness, with minimal effect on pH. The findings indicate that both plant materials alter water chemistry but do not improve its suitability for drinking purposes. The study highlights the importance of evaluating plant-based treatments before their application in water purification.
