Abstract

Abstract:

Nodal anatomy of 14 species from 10 genera of Fabaceae family has been examined. The nodes are either tri-lacunar, three-traced or multi-lacunar, multi-traced. However, the former condition is more prevalent. The latter condition is thought a derived one.  It is probably in response to the larger size of the foliage leaves. A progression from stipulate to exstipulate leaves is witnessed. Nodal anatomy of this alliance appears helpful to some extent for taxonomic realignments especially at tribal level. Taxonomic positions particularly of the genera Abrus and Erythrina are assessed in the light of present study and evidence from other disciplines. These may be referred outside the tribes Vicieae and Phaseoleae into their independent tribes viz., the Abreae and Erythrineae, however, closer to the Phaseoleae.
