Abstract

A total of 257 first lactation records of Mehsana buffaloes, maintained at Livestock Research Station, SDAU, Sardarkrushinagar, Gujarat, were analyzed to study the effect of period and season of calving on first production and reproduction traits and to estimate genetic parameters for these traits. The overall least squares means for various first production traits viz. first lactation yield, first lactation length, first peak yield and days to attain first peak yield were 1708.62±32.50 lit., 298.84±4.33 days, 9.61±0.50 lit. and 81.48±2.66 days, whereas for first reproduction traits viz., first dry period, first Service period, first Calving Interval, Age at first service and age at first calving means were 165.35±8.70, 154.85±12.29, 460.97±12.50, 1251.98±41.26 and 1551.31±40.74 days, respectively. The effect of period of calving was significant for all production and reproduction traits. The least squares analysis of variance table revealed that the season of calving had non-significant effect on all first production traits whereas had significant effect on first reproduction traits except on FDP and FCI. Among the various first production and reproduction traits, the heritability estimate was moderate for FLY, low for FLL and FPY, higher for AFS and AFC and below theoretical limits for DAFPY, FDP, FSP and FCI. The significant genetic correlations (rg) of FDP with DAFPY and FCI with AFC were observed in the present study. Further, the phenotypic correlations (rp) of FLY with all traits except DAFPY and AFC; FLL with FDP; FSP and FCI; FDP with FSP and FCI; FSP with FCI; FPY with DAFPY were significant. The records should be adjusted for significant effects of period and season of calving and the animals should be selected by using appropriate selection method based on heritability estimates obtained in the study.
