2. SYNTHESIS OF COUMARINS AND INVESTIGATION OF THEIR ANTIMICROBIAL ACTIVITY by PAVANKUMAR MURALAKAR AND SURESHA KUMARA T. H.
Abstract
A laboratory experiment was conducted in Dept. of Chemistry, Kuvempu University, Shankaraghatta, Karnataka, India to synthesize coumarins and investigate their antimicrobial activity during 2007-08. 3.5 g yield of 4-Methyl-benzocoumarin was obtained with the 48.01 per cent yield, 110 ?C melting point and 0.813 Rf value (Retention factor value). The derivatives 4-methyl-7-nitrobenzocoumarin and 3-bromo-4-methyl-7-nitro benzocoumarin were also prepared in the laboratory which yielded 2 g and 0.6 g respectively. The antibacterial activity of 4-Methyl-benzocoumarin and its derivatives on micro-organisms i.e. Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus and Pseudomonas aeruginosa was found positive.
