Abstract

The present study was conducted with an aim of determining biocontrol potential of a macrolichen Usnea pictoides G.Awasthi (Parmeliaceae) against Fusarium oxysporum f.sp. zingiberi and Pythium aphanidermatum isolated from rhizome rot of ginger. Poisoned food technique was employed to screen the aqueous extract of the lichen to inhibit the two fungi. The extract exhibited a concentration dependent inhibition of test fungi as revealed by reduction in colony diameter of test fungi in poisoned plates. Among fungi, susceptibility was recorded higher in case of P. aphanidermatum. The lichen could be used as a potential candidate in the biocontrol of phytopathogens of rhizome rot. Further, field experiments are to be conducted to justify the possible utilization of the lichen against rhizome rot disease of ginger.
