Abstract

An experiment was carried out to assess the effectiveness of gamma irradiation (200, 300, 400, and 500 Gy) on the black gram (urdbean) variety ADT 3 at National Pulses Research Centre (NPRC), Tamil Nadu Agricultural University, Vamban, during rabi 2012 season. Observations were recorded on seed germination, seedling survival, plant height at 30 days after sowing and at maturity, pollen and seed fertility in M1 generation. Results revealed the progressive reduction for all the traits studied viz., germination and survival percentage, pollen and seed fertility and plant height in the mutagenic treatments. Deleterious effects were more pronounced at higher doses of mutagenic treatment, indicating a linear relationship. LD50 values were observed in 400 Gy of gamma rays. The higher doses of gamma rays decreased the seedling survival, fertility. The reduction in these traits has been attributed to the physiological disturbance or chromosomal damages of the cells of the plant caused by the gamma rays.
