WILD EDIBLE PLANTS OF UTTAR DINAJPUR DISTRICT, WEST BENGAL

Abstract

Uttar Dinajpur is a district where the community is predominated by Rajbangsi (16.59 %) and other communities such as Santal, Oraon, Munda, Sabar, Lodha etc. These communities represent 32.82% of the total population. Most of the tribal communities use wild plants as food from their surroundings. During the field survey a total of 91 plant species belonging to 51 families and 78 genera that are being used as wild edibles by the tribals as well as common people of Uttar Dinajpur district are being traced out. Out of these 91 species 89 species are angiosperms and 2 species belong to pteridophytes. Of the angiosperms, 74 species are dicotyledonous and 17 species are monocotyledonous.
